like decking boards, timber joists, decking screws, saw, hammer, nails, power tools,
joists hanger etc.
First, you have to plan the garden decking area and check its level using a spirit
level. Then make a frame the size of the area you have selected. Fix it to the tannalised
support posts, which should be well fixed into the ground. Now place the timber
joists into the frame parallel to each other, they should be at 450mm centres to
create the stability that your garden decking will need (so you don't get that dreaded
bounce when you walk on it). Fix them to the frame, using joist hangers or screws
that are long enough and strong enough to take the weight.You will then need to
put in some chocs between the timber joists to give it more rigidity. To prevent
weeds from growing under garden decking, place a plastic membrane on the ground.
Now it is time to place the garden decking boards, at right angles to the timber
joists. Keep a gap of 3 to 4mm between the decking boards. As this is a timber garden
decking, you need to protect it from water, sunlight and mould. For this, you need
to treat it with a garden decking stain and preservative product. There is variety
of such products available in the market and it gives you many options to choose
the colour you like.
You can easily build your own garden decking if you have proper skills, tools and
know-how to choose the proper garden decking materials. Remember, it should be strong
enough to act like an outdoor living area.
