Choosing the Right Decking Materials
|
|
|
Deck building involves selecting and working with a variety of decking materials.
In the past your choices were limited to pressure treated wood, cedar, or redwood.
Today your choices are not so simple. The decking materials options range from composite
decking materials made from recycled plastics to a wide variety of domestic timbers.
New products are flooding into the market every year. You may be trying to accomplish
a certain look or cut down on maintenance so the importance of choosing the correct
decking materials is vital.
Decking materials must be able to withstand the powerful forces of nature over years
of exposure to the elements. Factors such as severe temperature changes, intense
sun, rain, snow, and wind will put any decking materials to the test of longevity.
Decking materials must also be strong; how can you be sure a material will be able
to support the loads exerted on it and pass building inspections? And on top of
everything else most people want their decking to be attractive and compliment their
house and landscaping.
We have designated the Decking Materials section of Deckingfirm.co.uk as a place
to buy all your decking materials as well as to educate the public on the properties
of decking materials and provide some very helpful information on the differences
between products you need to consider when you make your decisions.
Introduction to Pressure Treated Decking Materials
Timber can be impregnated with a variety of preservative chemicals to prevent rot
in exterior applications like decking. Several diffrent types of wood can be treated.
Pressure treated timber are ideal decking materials for outdoor construction as
it has a long, useful life span and is much less expensive than alternative decking
materials. Treated wood can last more than 40 years. The treatment process involves
placing a load of timber in a huge cylindrical chamber called a retort with a door
on one end that can be sealed airtight and then forcing waterborne chemicals into
the wood under pressure.
Uses for Pressure Treated wood
Pressure treated wood has been used for many years for telephone poles, piers, bridges
and even as building foundations in the place of masonry. Decking will almost always
be constructed using pressure treated wood for the framing materials and, in most
of the country, is the predominant material for decking and handrails. Treated wood
meets a variety of essential requirements for this purpose. It is strong, resistant
to decay and termite infestation, highly durable, easy to work with, has widespread
availability and is inexpensive.
Caution:
|
Never burn treated timber. Always use a dust mask when cutting timber. Make sure
to wash your hands before eating after handling decking materials.
