Decking Boards-Tips on How to Replace Them

There comes a time in the life of some decking boards where cleaning and refinishing the decking boards simply isn't enough. Splintering, cracking, missing fasteners and other structural problems have taken their toll, and nothing is going to solve the problems and refurbish the deck except complete replacement of those worn-out decking boards.

Replacing decking boards is certainly not an insurmountable problem, but it does require a fair amount of work. However, done correctly the end result will be some decking that is virtually brand-new, and is less expensive and less work than replacing the entire decking structure.

First, clean the decking boards with a thorough sweeping. This is an important step, as it reveals the fasteners and makes it easier to access them for removal.

For removal, you will need some basic tools as well as some safety gear for your protection. Gloves should be worn to protect against splinters and broken fasteners, as well as safety glasses.

Screws are best removed using a variable speed corded or cordless screwdriver. You can also use a hand screwdriver, but this is very tedious and tiring for this particular task.

The trick to removing old decking board screws is to make sure the slots in the head are clean so that the screwdriver tip can fully engage them.

Insert the screwdriver tip into the screw head, then position yourself over the screw gun and place pressure straight down to keep the tip fully in contact with the screw head. Use a slow speed on the gun until you are sure that the screw has broken free of the decking boards, then speed up gradually until the screw comes completely out. This all seems very tedious, but if you get in the habit of using these steps, you'll have a lot more success getting the screws out, and a lot less frustration dealing with broken ones.

Once you have removed the old decking boards, you can now replace them with the new decking boards that you have purchased. To do this you need to offer up the new decking boards to the now offending gap in your decking and cut the decking boards to the correct size.Once the decking boards have all been cut to size place them into the gaps of your decking and screw the decking boards down making sure that you align the decking screws with the decking joists below.
